getting your 1st licence

applying for a provisional driving licence

Before you can take driving lessons with Simply Learners Driving School you must have had your application for a provisional driving licence accepted and in your possession. If you are in receipt of the higher rate of disability, you may start learning when you are 16 years old otherwise you have to wait until your 17th birthday before you can start.

You can apply for your new driving licence up to two months before you can have Driving Lessons Preston, Chorley and Leyland, however it is illegal for you to start driving before your 17th birthday.

The provisional licence will not expire until your 70th birthday but you will need to renew the photo card every 10 years so the photo can be updated.

You can apply for your provisional driving licence by completing the D1 application form that is available from the DVLA form ordering service or Post Office branches. You will also need to enclose original documentation confirming your identity, a passport style colour photograph and the fee of £50.00. Send your completed application and payment to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AD

You can apply for your first provisional driving licence for a car, moped or motorcycle using the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency's (DVLA) online service.

As DVLA no longer issue paper licences they will need a photo and signature for your licence. If you have a UK digital passport DVLA will try to electronically capture these from the Identity and Passport Service.

If this isn’t possible or you don’t want them to use the photo on your digital passport you will need to send them a photo by post. A completion form will be available at the end of the online application.

You can use the premium checking service to get your application checked and sent on to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), when applying for a photo card driving licence. The service is available at selected Post O ffice branches and DVLA local offices.

You can apply for your licence at a Post Office with your application, identification, photograph and any required fee. A clerk will check your application to be sure that all sections have been filled in correctly and send it to DVLA. They may also need to send your identification depending on what you use with your application.

Post Office branches need one of the following identity documents:

  • current United Kingdom (UK) passport
  • proof of receipt of UK State Retirement Pension (a bank or building society statement received within the last three months)
  • proof of eligibility to UK State Retirement Pension letter (BR2102, BR2103 or BR5899)

If you use your digital passport it will be given back to you if you allow DVLA to check your identity with the Identity and Passport Service (IPS). If you use your proof of a pension, you'll have these documents given back to you. DVLA reserves the right to ask for these documents if necessary. If you use a digital passport and do not allow DVLA to check your identity with IPS or you use a non-digital passport the document must be sent to DVLA. Identity documents must be in your current name. You can't use this service if you're changing your name. There is a premium service fee which is additional to the licence fee.
